Phyllis — Where We Learned to RV

Phyllis, our 2015 Coachmen Leprechaun — the RV where we really learned how we liked to travel.

Before Harriet, there was Phyllis.

Our interest in RV travel really started with a proof-of-concept trip. We rented an RV, headed down to Phoenix to meet up with my brother, and then continued on to the Grand Canyon while the boys were still young. That trip was enough to convince Lisa that this might be something we could actually enjoy doing.

In January 2016, we bought a used 2015 Coachmen Leprechaun in Alvarado, Texas. It had only about 1,500 miles on it.

The couple who originally bought it had planned to travel during retirement. They managed one trip together before the wife died. Her husband was so broken up that he wanted nothing more to do with the motorhome, and their son eventually put it on consignment.

Because her name was still on the title, a copy of her death certificate was included with the paperwork. That was how we learned her name was Phyllis.

Lisa and I talked about it and decided that Phyllis should be the motorhome’s name too. The original Phyllis never got the chance to travel the way she and her husband had planned, so in our own small way, we decided she could keep traveling with us.

And she did.

Phyllis became the RV where we really learned how we liked to travel. A lot of what eventually led us to Harriet started with the miles, mistakes, lessons and memories we collected in that old Leprechaun.
