Fort Davis is one of those places we keep finding our way back to. Our first trip there was with my brother Fred a few years ago, and since then Lisa and I have returned on our own more than once. It sits in the mountains of West Texas, north of Alpine, in a part of the state that feels very different from what many people picture when they think of Texas.

We have stayed at McMillan RV Park, explored the town and surrounding area, and used Fort Davis as a comfortable base for seeing more of far West Texas. Big Bend National Park is close enough for a day trip, and there is plenty to see without going that far.

The history is what first gives Fort Davis its identity, but for us the appeal goes beyond the historic site itself. The mountain setting, small-town pace, dark skies, and the surrounding country have all helped make it a place we are always happy to return to.
