Fred recommended La Posta de Mesilla to us, so we stopped there on our first trip west in Harriet. It turned out to be exactly the kind of place that works for Rolling Nichols — good food, a memorable setting, and enough history around it to make the stop about more than just lunch.

La Posta occupies an adobe compound dating to the 1840s that later served as the Corn Exchange Hotel and a stop on the Butterfield Stagecoach line. The restaurant itself opened in 1939. Just across the street, Billy the Kid was jailed in the old Mesilla courthouse, which was one of the details Fred found especially interesting.

The food was good, as we expected, but the history of Mesilla and the building itself are what made the stop stick with us. It’s the kind of restaurant where the surroundings are part of the meal.
