It’s getting to be that time again, although this year the start of our travel season will look a little different.

We won’t be leaving home until after our youngest son gets married on Halloween. We also want to be here to vote on November 3, so it looks like we’ll probably pull out on November 4.

Normally, Harriet would have spent the summer tucked away in storage in Fremont, Nebraska, waiting for us to load her up and head south. This year didn’t work out that way. Because of my health problems last spring, Harriet never made the trip back to Nebraska. Instead, she stayed at my sister-in-law Gina’s place in Texas.

So this season begins with Vern.

We’ll load up the F-150, drive down to Texas, reunite with Harriet, and spend some time getting everything ready for another winter on the road. We’ll have a few weeks there before Thanksgiving, which should give us plenty of time to settle back in, take care of anything Harriet needs, and get organized without rushing.

Then, probably the day after Thanksgiving, we’ll point Harriet west.

We have a general route in mind, but as usual, we’re leaving room for plans to change. There are places we already know we want to visit, some familiar stops we’re looking forward to seeing again, and undoubtedly a few places we don’t know about yet.

That’s part of the fun.

For now, we’re still home. There’s a wedding to celebrate, an election to vote in, and plenty to do before departure day.

But we’re starting to think about the road again.

And that usually means it won’t be long.
