- Description: Scenic Park in South Sioux City keeps us close to family and friends, with a familiar campsite and time beside the Missouri River.

Scenic Park Campground in South Sioux City, Nebraska, is one of those places we’ve stayed so many times that it has become familiar territory. Our most recent visit was over the Fourth of July in 2025\. We don’t go there for elaborate amenities. We go because it works for us, and because it puts us right beside a river we’ve known most of our lives.

Lisa is from Sioux City, Iowa, just across the Missouri River. I grew up in Lawton, a little farther east on Highway 20\. We still have family and friends in the area, and Scenic Park gives us a place to settle in while we visit.

We haven’t found a public RV park in Sioux City itself that suits us as well. Staying across the river puts us close to everyone without having to stay in town on the Iowa side. And sometimes the visiting comes to us.

Family or friends can come over for an afternoon or evening. We get to spend time together, and when they head home, we’re already home. That’s one of the things we appreciate about traveling this way.

## A practical place to stay

Scenic Park is a city-owned campground on the Nebraska side of the Missouri. I would describe it as utilitarian. It provides a useful place to stay, but the amenities aren’t the main reason we keep coming back.

It can also feel tight, particularly now that we’re traveling in Harriet, which is even bigger than our previous motorhome, [Phyllis](https://www.rollingnichols.com/phyllis-where-we-learned-to-rv). If you’re bringing a larger rig, I’d discuss your dimensions and site options with the campground when making a reservation. Our repeated visits make the place familiar to us, but that doesn’t make the space any bigger.

For anyone interested in swimming, the nearby Norm Waitt Sr. YMCA has indoor pools, and there is also a separate seasonal outdoor Aquaplex. Check their current admission arrangements and schedules rather than assuming swimming is included with your campsite.

For our purposes, though, the most important amenity is being close to the people we came to see.

## The river is worth your time

There is another reason I appreciate Scenic Park, and it’s one I can overlook when I’m describing the campground in practical terms: the Missouri River.

You can walk down to the river and look across at Sioux City. Lisa and I both grew up around the Missouri, so that view feels familiar. I have to remind myself that plenty of people have never spent much time around a river this large.

When I was younger, I boated on it, skied on it, and even rafted on it. The power of that river has always enthralled me. Familiarity hasn’t worn that off.

Every time we stay at Scenic Park, I go down and sit beside it for a while. There doesn’t have to be anything else going on. Watching the water is enough.

If you haven’t been around a river like the Missouri, give yourself some time to do that. Find a safe place along the bank, sit quietly, and watch. I think the sheer size and power of it can be an overwhelming experience. It still holds my attention after all these years.

## Why we keep returning

Scenic Park may not be the campground someone chooses for a vacation built around campground amenities. For us, it fills a different role, and fills it well.

It lets us return to familiar territory, visit family and friends, and bring our own home along. Then, between visits, I can walk down to the Missouri and spend a little time with an old acquaintance.

That’s plenty of reason to keep coming back.
